Nothing stays the same forever, we change jobs, partners, location, become parents (that’s usually the point our body shape changes). When your clothes no longer reflect your lifestyle, you will feel frustrated from the lack of choice in your wardrobe.
How to plan your wardrobe?
Create a lifestyle pie graph. Shade in the sections according the percentage of time you spend in the following activities over a month.
Knowing what you already have in your wardrobe will assist you in deciding what you really need. Find out what areas are missing for example, do you have things to wear when you go out for drinks with friends?
Create a clothing cluster
A clothing cluster is a group of 5-15 pieces (jacket, skirt, pants, etc.) that work in combination with each other.
Start building a clothing cluster by mixing and matching what you already have in your wardrobe. If you feel that nothing matches get a friend (or stylist) to have a look. A set of fresh eyes can often see mix and match options you may have missed. Now make a list of items you need to compliment your wardrobe eg. dressy tops, day dresses, casual jacket.
Set a budget and stick to it.
Once you have allocated an amount to spend you can save time by looking in stores that suit your price range. Remember you are on a mission to find clothes you will love and wear. If you don’t need it badly or want it madly, put it back!
Quality over quantity
Spend good money on well fitting pieces. Poor quality clothes will loose they shape and wear out faster. Some timeless must haves are; dark denim jeans, skirts and pants in solid neutral colours and a good quality leather hand bag. Use inexpensive fashion accessories like a scarf, belt or jewellery to update your wardrobe.
Take a camera
Put a stop to clothes sitting in your wardrobe with the tag still attached. If the store you are in does not have a three way mirror, a camera is a must. Pictures never lie, use them as a reference point before you purchase any outfit.
Shop ahead of time
If you require an outfit for a special occasion don’t wait until the last minute, start looking now, give yourself at least 2 weeks to find something that is perfect.
A wardrobe of clothes that your suits your style, colouring, personality and lifestyle will ensure you always have something to wear.
