Hi,
Welcome to the CBWC eNewsletter, a publication for our members that

keeping you informed of events, committee happenings, policies,
professional development, club changes and a whole host more.
Please read the list of Members on the right hand side of this email.
If you notice any friends or colleagues missing from the list - let them
know. Their membership may have expired.
In JULY this year ALL memberships expire, and we
move to an annual roll over process. Our Membership term is AUGUST to
JULY each year. The next Term is Aug 08 to July 09. Unless you have paid
us until JUL 09 (some of you have - thank you) - then you can expect a
Membership reminder email early July reminding you to pay by the end of
July.
Business Woman of the Year Awards - the 2008
Awards Campaign took off in April when Nominations opened. So far a
whopping 75 nominations have been received. I wonder if we can break our
record of 82? Join me and other CBWC members and
nominate a colleague or friend you believe deserves to be recognised.
In this edition of our monthly Member's eNewsletter
there is a host of information and articles of interest. Our
cover article is about research into how regional businesswomen are
winning the race when it comes to entrepreneurial spirit. Andrea
Jackson delights us with her review of the MacDonnell's Law CBWC
Business and Bubbles Networking event recently hosted by Zabu and Jenny
Petersen from the CBWC Secretariat gets up close and personal with our
members!
Have a great winter month in your business and we look
forward to seeing you
at the July CBWC Luncheon where we host speakers, Karen Wolfe and John Mulcahy who will be talking about the huge superannuation shortfall
experienced by women and what we can do to plan our way into a wealthy
future.
Warmest regards

Administration of the CBWC
The Cairns Business Women's Club is a not-for-profit organisation
that has had tremendous growth in the past five years. This growth has
lead to the establishment of a large team of volunteers, committee and
paid staff who each week manage to organise up to 3 events per month for
members and their friends.
It is our pleasure this month to introduce to you to the manager of
the administration team, Jenny Petersen.
Jenny is contracted by the CBWC to attend to the administration and
finance of the CBWC, in particular all bookkeeping, ticketing,
membership payments and event logistics.
Jenny has a background in administration working previously in both
accounting and legal practices. Jenny took time off to have her two boys
and more recently she joined the CBWC Team.
|
Jenny attends to over 20 hours per week of CBWC work and volunteers
an additional 10 hours, to ensure our members receive tickets to their
events, money is banked and receipted and membership is processed. With
over 250+ sales items transacted each month this is a huge undertaking.
Jenny is on the registration desk at most CBWC events. Please say
hello to her when you register. She'd love to meet you. |

are thanked in the fortnightly eNotice Board. Prizes valued at more
than $300 will also feature the
company logo in the
eNotice Board.
Buy your tickets at events for a chance to win fabulous prizes.

Payments for Events
The CBWC has to pay for event catering, venue hire and equipment
prior to each event. To ensure we receive all payments the CBWC
Committee has governed that all payments must be paid by Credit Card
prior to the event.
Only government departments and large cheque administrated businesses
can pay by cheque. These businesses will be on a Cheque Approved list
that is authorised by the CBWC Treasurer.
Please help us run the CBWC business by ensuring you pay for all of
your event tickets prior to the event by Credit Card unless you are on
the Authorised Cheque Approved List.
Refunds for Tickets to Events
The CBWC is tightening up the administration of our events. We ask
all of our members to read the section below and note the Event
Ticketing Policy and Procedures. Over the next few months we will share
other related Policies with you.
The CBWC policy is that NO event ticket refunds will be given where a
cancellation is made less than 5 business days prior to an event. This
is due to the fact that the CBWC will have already counted your ticket
in the catering numbers presented to hotels on the morning of the fourth
business day prior to the event. The CBWC has to pay for all catering
prior to the event - if you cancel and expect a refund in this time - we
are still left to pay for the catering. As a not-for-profit organisation
we cannot afford to pay for your catering and issue you a refund.
Your ticket is transferable so if you have a friend or colleague who
wants to attend in your place please let us know and we will put their
name on the registration list.
If you request a refund five or more business days prior to an event
we will issue you a refund less an $11 administration fee per ticket. |

Momentus News - CBWC's Ms President
becomes Mrs President!
On behalf of the CBWC Committee, it is my pleasure to announce some
great news. Last year, Shelley couldn't have asked for a more romantic marriage
proposal as Simon Wild proposed while the happy couple cruised at sunset
in a gondola in Tuscany, Italy. The question was - how could Simon ever
top that romantic proposal? Of course, the answer was simple - get
married in an even more romantic setting - Villa Buonvisi in Lucca,
Italy!
Accompanied by close friends and family, Simon and Shelley tied the
knot on the 8th May 2008.
On behalf of the CBWC Committee and members, I would like to extend a
huge congratulations to Shelley and Simon Wild and wish them all the
best for the future together as man and wife.
A toast: to Shelley and Simon ...

The wedding party: Danae Jones, Hayley Williams, Shelley, Simon,
Heath Williams and Shane Wedding
Yours sincerely,

Business Women in Regional Areas Pave the Way
Recently I read an article that announced that women in regional
areas are more likely to take the plunge and start a business at a
younger age. This researched commissioned by Westpac also highlighted
the following interesting trends:
- Women in small business plan more effectively and focus on the long
term, as well as short term planning.
- Regional business women are more likely to take risks, give new things
a try and have a higher level of flexibility.
- In regional Australia, almost two-thirds of women starting a business
tended to be under 35, compared to 44 percent of city based
businesswomen.
- The majority of women in small business would not consider returning
to a large corporation.
- Major issues for small business generally: managing staff, cash flow,
staffing, work/life balance, red tape and legislation.

Women are Facing a Critical Retirement Funds Shortfall
Regardless of how many years you are away from your retirement; sound
planning is critical to your personal and professional wealth creation.
Despite one third of small businesses being owned by women,
approximately four in five do not contribute to superannuation.
At the next CBWC luncheon, hear the stark reality of why many women
are at a serious disadvantage when it comes to achieving financial
success and how and what you can do about it. Get the most out of your
life planning and join members and friends of the CBWC to get the latest
tips and advice on how to plan for your retirement future.

Business & Bubbles in Superb Style!
Guests at the MacDonnell's Law CBWC Business & Bubbles networking
event on 5 June hosted at Zabu Cairns were wowed by the fabulous
furnishings and home wares displayed with inspirational flair. Zabu
oozed comfort, style and quality with furnishings that cannot be found
anywhere else in Cairns. My personal favourites were the White Mango
range, and yes, I did return the following week with my tape measure to
help me decide which delectable pieces I would purchase for my new
house!
The feedback from Business & Bubbles guests included "Wow!" "Oh, I
just love this. Can I take it home now?" "This is so comfy that I'm not
moving" and "I'm coming back on the weekend!"
And come back they did. Kate Ilford, Managing Director and Owner of
Zabu Cairns launched her June Sale at Business & Bubbles and was
delighted to see guests coming back on the weekend with their cash,
chequebooks and credit cards, as well as with friends and family!
When I returned with my tape measure the following week, I asked Kate
to tell me about the value the Business & Bubbles event created for Zabu.
Kate was delighted with the overwhelmingly positive feedback as well as
the large proportion of guests that have been back to the store since
(some more than once!). Kate was also thrilled to hear from others in
the business world that "everyone is talking about Zabu."
Kate certainly made the most of the opportunities created by hosting
a Business & Bubbles, using the event to do some valuable market
research. The feedback she gathered is now being used to refine her
business strategies and keep Zabu growing from strength to strength.
I confess I am loving Business & Bubbles this year! April introduced
us to The Spa at The Cairns International Hotel and June catered to my
passion for furnishings at Zabu. Now we are plotting the next event
which caters to another two favourite passions…
Fanfare please as we introduce the next MacDonnells Law CBWC Business
& Bubbles on 1 August 2008 hosted by Viva Boutique and Sassi Shoes!
Viva Boutique and Sassi Shoes are treating us to an exclusive fashion
show in the lead up to Amateurs. This is going to be a very popular
event, so make sure you book early! To book, go to
www.cbwc.org.au.
If you are interested in showcasing your business at a Business &
Bubbles event, you need to act quickly as spots fill up fast! For more
information, please email the CBWC Secretariat -
info@cbwc.org.au. Cheers until
next month,

This month's Law Tip from MacDonnells Law

Competition laws - as a small player you are not immune
Competition law has assumed a high profile in the business community due in
part to multi-million dollar prosecutions and the proposed introduction of
jail terms for more serious offences. However, a misleading perception is
for smaller businesses to assume they are immune from competition laws,
which is far from the truth.
It's not only the big players who are exposed to competition law. The
purpose of competition law is to promote a competitive marketplace for the
benefit of Australian consumers. A competitive marketplace involves winners
and losers, small competitors and large. Some organisations won't survive in
a competitive marketplace. Competition law accepts that but sets out the
rules, including rules of fair play, which must be adhered to.
