CBWC Club Partners:

President's report

Dear members and friends,

The CBWC grows from strength to strength as our lunches attract a sell out crowd and our membership flourishes.

Last Friday the Business & Bubbles networking event was breathtakingly relaxing as 110 guests enjoyed the tranquil surrounds of the gorgeous and most eloquent of venues, Whitfield House. Our sincere thanks go to Joy and Harriet at Whitfield House who were our most gracious hosts.

Look out July, it is just around the corner and the CBWC is launching the 2006 Cairns Business Woman of the Year Awards. Join us for the July lunch and bring a friend you'd like to nominate for one of the region's most prestigious Awards. You'll get to mingle and meet with previous winners, enjoy video footage of previous events and be first in line to nominate yourself, a colleague, your manager perhaps or a business friend.

Three cheers for our Club Partners too; Bendigo Bank, Forest Gardens, MacDonnells Law, 4CAFM and SEVEN. It is great to be sharing our successful journey this year with these proactive and supportive businesses.

It would be great to see you at the July lunch,

Kind regards

Shelley Evans

Committee profile - Cathy Mattinson

In each newsletter edition, we intend to tell you a little bit about one of our committee team members.

Cathy Mattinson - Guest Speaker Coordinator
I started my Finance Career in Bankcard/Chargecard Services in Auburn NSW in 1979. I moved to Cairns in 1985 wherein I had my second son, and went back to work in 1986 for Suncorp, the then SGIO Building Society. In 1987 I was made Branch Manager of the Spence St, Branch. In 1992, I left Suncorp and worked for Dean & Bolton Solicitors running their Property/Finance Division along with being Office Manager. Suncorp approached me to go back in 1996 as Retail Mobile Lending Manger, and in 2000 when a new Division in the Bank was created I became the Business Manager Far Nth Qld.

I commenced my own Finance Business in February 2004, ( Cathy Mattinson Financial Services ) utilising all my skills - Lending for Housing, Equipment, Business and Commercial & Development so I can cover any requirement that my clients have. Both my boys have grown up and left the nest, so I take a more active role in the community, being on the Executive Committee CBWC, Steering Committee Lead On Program, Awards Committee CBWC, Debate Coach/Committee member The Great Debate and have been asked to be the Representative for Cairns for the MIAA ( Mortgage Industry Association of Australia ).

New member profile

Pamela Mills and Christa Koch – Holmans

Pamela Mills, a Cairns local and keen yachtie, is a highly qualified and experienced chartered accountant.

Pamela has more than seven years of experience in public practice, specialising in taxation and business services, with particular experience in primary production (agriculture, aquaculture and fishing), national franchises, retailing, construction and real estate. In addition to her taxation expertise, Pamela has more than six years of broad commercial experience, including insurance and super fund administration, small business development and administration, development and implementation of business quality assurance programs, and financial administration within the electrical contracting and oil services industries.

Taking up accounting in 1996 on returning to Australia after four years of travelling and working overseas, Pamela completed her Bachelor of Commerce at James Cook University in 2000, and in 2005 was awarded a Master of Applied Taxation from the University of New South Wales. While studying towards the Master degree Pamela focused on the areas of taxation of property transactions, taxation of companies, taxation of trusts and taxation of employee remuneration.

Being passionate about providing high quality, proactive value-adding services to her business clients prompted Pamela to joined Holmans in 2005, with the purpose of establishing and managing Holmans' new Cairns office, which was officially launched in March 2006.

The newest face on the Holmans' Cairns team is Christa Koch. Christa is a Kuranda resident who likes to keep fit by running and cycling. Christa completed her Bachelor of Commerce at James Cook University in 2004 and is currently studying towards her CPA accreditation. Christa has two year's of public practice and is rapidly developing expertise in business services and taxation.

Holmans was established in Noosa by Greg Holman. Starting with just three clients in 1994, the firm has since grown to be one of the most comprehensive and highly regarded business and wealth management services firms on the Sunshine Coast - and now in Cairns.

No two businesses are the same, so Holmans has designed a series of service units within the firm which allows us to look at the overall picture for each client's range of business and financial needs. Holmans now has more than 35 highly qualified team members with expertise spanning all of our service units. Our services include: business development and consulting, accounting and taxation, auditing, financial planning, superannuation services, management rights services, personal and commercial finance brokering and insurance brokering.

What sets Holmans apart is our 'partnership' philosophy, which allows us to work proactively with each and every client as partners in their financial development. Our commitment to our clients is to equip them with the knowledge needed to make informed choices that assist them in creating wealth, managing wealth and enjoying wealth.

Holmans are proud recipients of the following awards:

2005: Highly Commended, Excellence in Business & Export Awards

MacDonnells Law "Legal tip"

Employment Law Tip from Mark Peters, Partner MacDonnells Law

Whenever you employ any salaried employee, make sure you have a written clause, at least in the letter of appointment, setting out the amount of notice, or payment in lieu of notice, the employer will give the employee in the event of termination. Too often, in the absence of agreement parties in dispute are left determining "reasonable notice", with employers often conceding an amount of notice significantly greater than could have been agreed at the outset of the employment.
